Goodbye 2013…

As we say goodbye to 2013, I want to share a little bit with you about 2013 (like every other blogger out there on the planet…) as we move into 2014.

2013 was supposed to be the year, MY year. The year of the full marathon. That is why I signed up for the 17.75k (guaranteed MCM entry). But my foot had other plans. My foot crapped out after the first soccer game of the season and kept me in a boot until May. 3 months… in a boot. Then, I moved to orthotics, which didnt do much… two doctors, two different solutions, no MRI. By the start of June I was angry. I wanted a solution and I wanted to know what was wrong, especially after having to forgo 3 races in my Spring season. In June, I saw my norm ortho at commonwealth ortho and went to the foot specialist in their practice to hear that I could do no more damage to my foot and I needed surgery.

I had surgery in mid-July and was up and attempting runs at the end of aug/beginning of sept. A month after getting back on the wagon, I conquered Ragnar, met some amazing friends and finally accepted that I was ready to tackle 26.2. I watched as people ran MCM without me (sad and upset, but supportive) and I moved forward. I began training for the second marathon I signed up for while in a boot, WDW; which I am taking on in under 2 weeks in Florida!

What else happened in 2013? I changed jobs from NASA to the Smithsonian and entered the world of Federales. As a Federale, I went to Drupalcon in May (wonderful conference for web dev nerds, I recommend. Recaps on my other blog). I got furloughed. I didn’t write much during the 2.5 week forced vacation. Being furloughed blew chunks. I got to take the day after thanksgiving off (first time in 4 years) and spend more time with family. I was able to telework through the holidays and have been truly blessed professionally.

Personally, my husband and I celebrated another year of marriage (2 years total, 4 years together). My friends were there for me, listening to me complain about my foot (mostly patiently although I could see how they might have lost patience as it was frustrating and I was obsessing). I made some new friends through Twitter — of which, I have met one when she ran the Cherry Blossom 10 miler and I will meet a few more in a little more than a week at Disney (all of team runDisney!)!

Gear I discovered in 2013: When they did away with my Mizuno Nirvanas, after surgery, I sought long and hard for a replacement shoe. I finally found my strong in Saucony Omni 12s. I discovered the use of The Stick and I also discovered Fitmark Bags!

This year has been a good year… a bit of a rollercoaster, but definitely a good year. I am thinking that 2014 will be a little bit better, and I have every intention of following through and making 2014 better than ever! Look for my outline of my plan for 2014 in the next week or two!

And thanks for hanging out with me all year!
